Republican congressmen praise Trump’s decision to attack Iran

Trump confirmed on Saturday that a "successful attack" was carried out against three nuclear sites in Iran.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed the bombing by the US military of the Iranian nuclear facilities in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordo, with the latter being the location where the largest attack has been carried out.

“We have successfully completed our attack on the three nuclear facilities in Iran, including Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. All aircraft are now out of Iranian airspace,” stated the American president on his Truth Social account.

After the event, Republican congressmen —and one Democrat— praised Trump.

“Good job, President Trump,” South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham posted on X. Texas Senator John Cornyn described the move as a “brave and correct decision.”

On her part, Alabama Senator Katie Britt described the bombings as “strong and precise.”

Similarly, Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin posted: “America first, always.”

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, said that Trump “has made a deliberate —and correct— decision to eliminate the existential threat posed by the Iranian regime.”

Wicker published in X that “we now have very serious decisions ahead to provide security to our citizens and allies.”

The swift support for increased U.S. involvement in the war between Israel and Iran was registered after Trump had been publicly weighing the attacks for days and many Republican congressmen had cautiously expressed that they thought he would make the right decision. The Senate Majority Leader, John Thune, said on Saturday night that “as we take action tonight to ensure that a nuclear weapon remains out of Iran’s reach, I support President Trump and pray for the troops and American personnel in danger.”

Thune and House Minority Leader Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, were informed before the attacks on Saturday, according to individuals familiar with the situation who requested anonymity to disclose it.

Johnson said in a statement that the military operations “should serve as a clear reminder to our adversaries and allies that President Trump follows through on what he says.”

The chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rick Crawford, a Republican from Arkansas, said he had also been in contact with the White House and “I am grateful to the members of the United States military who carried out these precise and successful attacks.”

In contrast to many of his Democratic colleagues, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, a staunch supporter of Israel, also praised the attacks on Iran. “As I have long maintained, this was the right move by @POTUS,” he tweeted. “Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot be allowed to have nuclear capabilities.”

In recent days, there have been divisions within the parties regarding the possibility of attacking Iran. Kentucky congressman Thomas Massie, a long-time Republican opponent of U.S. involvement in foreign wars, posted on X after Trump announced the attacks that “this is not constitutional.”

A large majority of Democrats have argued that Congress should have a voice. The Senate was scheduled to vote as early as this week on a resolution from Virginia Senator Tim Kaine requiring Congress approval before the United States declares war on Iran or takes specific military actions.
