Mexican Navy school ship collides with Brooklyn Bridge: at least two people died

A ship from the Mexican Navy collided with one of the supports of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. The Cuauhtémoc ship, with around 300 people on board, hit the bridge support on Saturday night.

According to international press reports, at least two people died and 19 were injured.

How did the incident on the Brooklyn Bridge occur?

“No items fell into the water, so the activation of rescue operations was not necessary,” clarified the Mexican Navy (Semar) in a statement on the social media platform X.

The authorities reported that the boat lost power, which forced them to divert towards the bridge.

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, referred to the issue on the same social media platform.

“We deeply regret the passing of two crew members of the training ship Cuauhtémoc, who lost their lives in the unfortunate accident at the port of New York. Our solidarity and support go out to the families,” stated the leader.

Furthermore, he thanked the support provided by the New York mayor.

On social media, images are circulating of the moment when several sailors were hanging from the masts of the ship Training Sailboat ARM Cuauhtémoc, when it suffered an accident colliding with the Brooklyn Bridge during a departure maneuver.

“Ambassador and Knight of the Seas”

The sailboat, internationally known as the “Ambassador and Knight of the Seas”, had arrived at Dock 17 last May 13th, where it remained docked until this Saturday.

During his stay, he offered guided tours to the public with the aim of strengthening friendship ties and promoting a message of peace and goodwill. This stop was part of an itinerary that includes 22 ports in 15 countries.

The Mexican Navy indicated that, following the incident, Mexican naval authorities and local authorities in New York immediately began reviewing the integrity of the personnel and assessing the damages to the ship.

Social media reports indicate that several crew members were taken to the Navy Yard and nearby hospitals for medical evaluation.

Built in 1982 in Bilbao, Spain, the Cuauhtémoc Sailboat is a symbol of the Mexican Navy, with a history of more than four decades representing the country in international ports.
