President Sheinbaum reveals why Mexico did not arrest Julio César Chávez Jr. despite an arrest warrant

The president ensures that she had no prior knowledge of the arrest warrant against JC Chávez Jr.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, spoke about the case of Julio César Chávez Jr., who was detained in the United States by immigration authorities. She revealed the reasons why the boxer was not previously arrested in Mexican territory, despite having an arrest warrant issued since 2023.

During her conference this Friday, July 4th on “La Mañanera del Pueblo”, Sheinbaum assured that she was unaware of the existence of the judicial order against the son of the legendary boxer Julio César Chávez until the news of his arrest in the United States was released.

“When the news came out, I contacted the prosecutor’s office and the prosecutor told me that he does have an arrest warrant in Mexico, which started the investigation in 2019; the arrest warrant is granted by a judge until 2023," stated the official.

The reason why Mexico did not arrest JC Chávez Jr.

According to the president, the security cabinet informed that Chávez Jr. spent most of his time in the United States, which would have made his capture in Mexico more difficult.

The arrest carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in California was reportedly executed, in part, based on the order issued by Mexican authorities.

“What the cabinet informed me on Friday, July 4, 2025, is that Julio César Chávez was in the United States for most of the time. Part of the detention is due to the arrest warrant in Mexico, and it is expected that there will be a deportation so that he can serve his sentence in Mexico,” Sheinbaum explained.

According to information provided by the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR), Julio César Chávez Jr. is accused of serious crimes, including arms trafficking, drug trafficking, and organized crime.

Mexico is waiting for his deportation to judge him

Sheinbaum stated that the Mexican government is coordinating with United States authorities to carry out the deportation of Chávez Jr., who remains in ICE custody while his immigration status is being determined.

On the other hand, The Chávez Family issued a statement in which they requested sensitivity and understanding regarding the situation of Julio César Chávez Jr., and expressed their desire for the legal process to take place without external pressures. Additionally, they expressed their confidence that the facts will be clarified and the resolution will be favorable for Julio.
