The Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs traveled to Moscow to speak with Putin about the United States’ attack

Russia and Iran are "strategic partners" in various areas, including defense.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, announced this Sunday his trip to Moscow to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin the attack carried out by the United States against their nuclear facilities in the early hours of this morning, within the context of the conflict between Israel and the Islamic Republic.

At night, the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, announced the arrival of Araghchi. "We confirm the arrival of the head of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow for a series of negotiations," she explained as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

Why does the Foreign Minister of Iran want to meet with Putin?

“I will meet with Putin on Monday morning. Russia is a friend of Iran and we enjoy a strategic relationship. We always consult and coordinate our positions. It has always been a part of the nuclear discussions and we have always informed our Russian friends of the developments in our talks, or rather the lack of progress, with the United States,” Araghchi during a press conference in Istanbul, Turkey.

In April of this year, Putin ratified a strategic partnership agreement signed with Iran the previous January, coinciding with a visit to Moscow by the Iranian president, Masud Pezeshkian, setting the roadmap for the next two decades.

The agreement crystallizes the legal framework for strengthening cooperation between the two countries in long-term development and positions the two countries as “strategic partners” in all areas, including defense, counterterrorism, energy, transportation, industry, and agriculture, among others.

Russia has not yet commented on the attacks and the Kremlin spokesperson, Dimitri Peskov, only informed the Russian news agency TASS that there is no planned phone conversation between Putin and the U.S. President, Donald Trump, although given the proximity of both leaders, this contact could happen “quite quickly.”
