Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, requested the United States government on Sunday not to treat migrants as criminals following the raids in Los Angeles in which 35 Mexicans were detained.
The president called for no raids to be carried out and for violence not to be employed.
“The Mexicans living in the United States are good men and women, they are honest individuals who went to the United States to seek a better life for themselves and to support their families. They are not criminals,” Sheinbaum said in a public speech in the city of Cholula.
Likewise, he emphasized that the work of migrants also “sustains the economy of the United States” and requested to address the issue through dialogue for a “comprehensive immigration reform” in that country.
“We do not agree with this way of addressing the migration phenomenon. It is not through raids or violence that the migration phenomenon will be addressed,” he stated.
Sheinbaum detailed that the consular network is already in contact with the 35 detained Mexicans and their families to advise them on their rights acquired after living several years in the neighboring country.
Earlier, over two thousand National Guard members arrived in Los Angeles by order of President Donald Trump to suppress protests against a series of immigration operations that have been affecting the area in recent days.
