Donald Trump stated on Monday that his government will not allow “any uranium enrichment” in a potential agreement with Iran regarding its nuclear program, amid negotiations between the two nations.
Iran and the United States have held a series of contacts, up to five so far, with the intention of reaching a new agreement on the Iranian nuclear program. The sixth round of this process, mediated by Oman, is expected to take place soon, although no date has been set yet.
What did Trump say about the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program?
“Under our potential agreement, we will not allow any uranium enrichment!” said the President of the United States on his Truth Social platform.
Hours earlier, from Cairo, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, defended that “there will be no agreement without respecting the right to enrich uranium” while also informing that “we will soon provide an appropriate response to the written proposal from the United States.”
In a press conference in the Egyptian capital, where he met with his counterpart from the Arab country, Badr Abdelati, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, he once again rejected “any demand that goes against the rights of the Iranian people”, considering uranium enrichment as an “indisputable right”.
The Iranian government demanded this Monday that the United States provide formal guarantees about lifting its sanctions imposed on Tehran in order to achieve a nuclear agreement. “If the problem is the absence of nuclear weapons, it is something that will be achieved,” said the spokesperson for the diplomatic department, Esmaeil Baqaei.
What is the status of the negotiations between the United States and Iran?
The United States and Iran contacts are the first of their kind since Washington’s withdrawal in 2018 by decision of Donald Trump from the historic nuclear agreement signed three years prior by the government of President Barack Obama.
Now, Trump himself is betting on relaunching the talks to try to forge a new pact with Tehran.
