On Monday, the US President, Donald Trump, announced an agreement between Russia and Ukraine for the “immediate” opening of negotiations for a ceasefire and to “end the war.”
Trump made this announcement after a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin and proposed the Vatican as a possible location for the talks.
What did Trump say about his conversation with Putin?
“I have just finished my two-hour conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. I think it went very well. Russia and Ukraine will immediately begin negotiations for a ceasefire and, most importantly, to end the war,” Trump announced on his account on Truth Social."
The President of the United States explained that Kiev and Moscow will negotiate the conditions “as it should be” because they “know details that no one else would perceive.”
Trump highlighted that “the tone and spirit” of the conversation with Putin “has been excellent”. “If it hadn’t been, I would have said so sooner rather than later. Russia wants to trade on a large scale with the United States once this catastrophic bloodbath is over, and I agree,” he said. “Russia can create a lot of jobs and wealth. Its potential is limitless,” added the President of the United States.
Regarding Ukraine, Trump commented that “they can also benefit from trade during the country’s reconstruction.”
The US president explained that he has already informed the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky; the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; the president of France, Emmanuel Macron; the prime minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni; the chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz; and the president of Finland, Alexander Stubb in a call immediately following the call with Putin.
“The Vatican, represented by the Pope, has declared its interest in hosting the negotiations. Let the process begin!” Trump concluded in his social media statement.
