Colombian senator victim of attack undergoes emergency surgery

Miguel Uribe underwent surgery after being diagnosed with "acute intracerebral bleeding."

Opposition party senator from Centro Democrático and presidential pre-candidate in Colombia, Miguel Uribe, underwent emergency neurosurgery on Monday after his medical team detected an “acute intracerebral bleeding”.

“The patient Miguel Uribe Turbay required transfer to the operating rooms a few minutes ago for urgent neurosurgical intervention due to clinical and imaging evidence of acute intracerebral bleeding,” reads a recent medical report released by the Santa Fe Foundation of Bogotá on social media.

The report comes after his medical team had stated just a few hours ago that he remained “hemodynamically stable” after undergoing another surgical procedure. “The postoperative cerebral tomographic control shows the expected results without observing any significant additional changes to those previously identified,” the Foundation has indicated.

The Colombian senator is in the intensive care unit “under observation” after receiving three gunshot wounds from a 15-year-old teenager who is currently in prison for attempted murder and illegal possession of weapons. The Colombian Attorney General’s Office has charged Katerine Martínez, who was arrested over the weekend in Florencia, in the department of Caquetá, for collaborating in the attack.

Around 70,000 people demonstrated in the Colombian capital on Sunday -- protests that were repeated in other parts of the Latin American country -- to condemn the attack against the leader of the opposition Democratic Center, who has remained hospitalized since then.
