The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, warned that the situation in the Gaza Strip is “terrible and intolerable” and, in the face of the escalation of the Israeli army’s military offensive and the obstacles to the arrival of aid, he “opened the door to the adoption of more measures against Israel, including sanctions.”
Starmer spoke about the issue during the question time in the House of Commons, emphasizing that his Government strongly opposes the expansion of Israeli military activity and the “blockade” of aid, in a new criticism of the policies of the Benjamin Netanyahu administration.
What are the demands of the United Kingdom?
The British Prime Minister requested an increase in the entry of supplies and basic goods, within a series of requests that also included the release of the hostages who are still held in the Strip by the Hamas group and “the return of the ceasefire” that Israel unilaterally broke in mid-March.
On the other hand, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Labour government, Hamish Falconer, also questioned in Parliament the “unjustifiable blockade” of humanitarian aid in Gaza, advocating for the UN and its partners on the ground to be in charge of distributing these goods, instead of the foundation established by Israel.
Falconer also questioned the “repeated” incidents during aid distributions that have resulted in the death of Palestinian civilians. In the most recent cases, Gaza authorities accused the Israeli army of shooting civilians, a situation that the Netanyahu government denies.
