With an emotional mass in St. Peter’s Square before more than 150,000 faithful, Leo XIV formally began his pontificate this Sunday, May 18th. The ceremony, full of symbolism and tradition, was attended by representatives from over 150 countries, including heads of state, religious leaders, and diplomatic figures.
During his homily, the new Pope -born in the United States under the name Robert Francis Prevost and also of Peruvian nationality- made a strong call for unity in the Church and global reconciliation. “It is the time for love, not judgment. The Church must open its arms to the world and be a catalyst for a reconciled world,” expressed Leo XIV, 69, before an expectant audience who listened to him in total silence.
As part of the enthronement ceremony, he was bestowed with the Pallium and given the Ring of the Fisherman, symbols of the beginning of his ministry as Bishop of Rome. In his message, he also offered a prayer for a “just and lasting peace” in Ukraine.
Leaders such as the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted the hopeful message of the pontiff.
From Latin America, the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, was received in audience by the Pope, making a special gesture towards the region.
Thus, Leo XIV becomes the first American pope and the second from the Americas to lead the Catholic Church, following Francis. His election marks a new stage with the challenge of facing internal divisions, global challenges, and renewing the pastoral mission in times of change.
