What Did Donald Trump Say About Mexico?

In the conversation published on September 2, Trump was asked about the border situation and the Mexican government’s ability to confront organized crime.

The president responded with praise for Sheinbaum, whom he described as “a wonderful woman” and “very elegant,” but he emphasized that “Mexico is run by the cartels.”

Trump said he offered to send the U.S. military to Mexico, but that the president rejected the proposal: “I offered to send in the military, but she doesn’t want us to do it,” Trump said. Asked why Sheinbaum refused, the Republican leader replied, “Because she’s scared… very scared.”

Sheinbaum Reiterates There Will Be No “Interventionism”

The U.S. president’s remarks come after months of friction over security and migration. Since the beginning of 2025, Trump has declared a national emergency at the border, imposed punitive tariffs on Mexico, and opened the door to designating the cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), all of which have heightened bilateral tensions.

Claudia Sheinbaum, for her part, has repeatedly stated in press conferences and interviews that there will be no foreign military intervention in Mexico and that cooperation with the United States must take place “on equal terms and without subordination.”

On August 8, the Mexican president categorically ruled out any possibility of an “invasion,” declaring that Mexican sovereignty “is not for sale.”

Deportations and New Legislation

In the same interview with Daily Caller, Trump defended his immigration policy and highlighted what he called “self-deportations,” claiming that “millions are leaving” voluntarily with incentives that would allow them to return in the future.

He also revealed that he is working on legislation that, he said, could satisfy both farmers who rely on migrant labor and his hardline base that opposes any illegal entry.
