Trump’s immigration agency detains Kilmar Ábrego three days after his release: they want to deport him to Uganda

The Salvadoran, a symbol of the Trump administration's policies against Latin American immigrants, had been released just last Friday in Tennessee.

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained the Salvadoran Kilmar Ábrego García, once again on Monday, with the possible aim of deporting him to Uganda, who is already considered a symbol of the immigration policies of the Donald Trump Administration.

Ábrego was released on Friday from a prison in Tennessee by order of a judge, over the weekend he reunited with his family after 160 days and this Monday he appeared at the ICE offices in Baltimore, as part of the agreement for his release on parole. The Salvadoran must face trial in Maryland for trafficking in persons.

Why was Ábrego detained by ICE again?

In March, despite being a legal citizen of the United States and having judicial protection since 2019, Ábrego was “erroneously” deported by ICE to El Salvador and was then sent to the CECOT prison, Nayib Bukele’s high-security jail.

After several rulings against the Trump administration, including one from the Supreme Court, Kilmar Ábrego was returned to the United States in June and detained in Tennessee.

After his release, the Salvadoran man was reunited with his wife and three children on Saturday, and on Monday he was accompanied by dozens of people to his check-in with ICE. There, he said that his release had been a “miracle” and thanked everyone who had fought for him.

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, confirmed the arrest of Ábrego García with a message on social media X, in which she accused the Salvadoran of being a member of the Mara Salvatrucha, trafficking in humans, and abusing children. “President Trump will not allow this illegal immigrant to continue terrorizing the citizens of the United States,” emphasized Noem, without specifying the destination to which Ábrego García will be deported.

Of all the accusations made by Noem, it is only known that the Salvadoran is being investigated for immigrant trafficking. As for the rest, the Trump administration has never provided evidence.

One of Kilmar Ábrego’s lawyers, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, told CNN that US authorities intend to deport him to Uganda as “revenge,” “to punish him for exercising his constitutional rights” by bringing his case to court.

“The lawyer said, “There is another perfectly reasonable option, Costa Rica, where your family can visit you more easily, but they are trying to send you to the other side of the world.”

The government of Uganda signed an agreement with the United States to accept deportations of citizens from third countries.
