How did the accident happen in New York?
“The driver is believed to have been distracted, lost control, overcorrected, and ended up overturned,” said Andre J. Ray, commander of the New York State Police at the scene of the accident, when announcing the number of fatalities.
"None of the injured are in critical condition," he pointed out before adding that several people who had been transferred to hospitals in the region were discharged.
On the bus were 52 people, including several children and the driver, who “survived and is doing well,” had previously reported the state police spokesman, James O’Callaghan.
Many travelers, who were not wearing their seat belts, were expelled from the bus and others were trapped under the vehicle, he explained.
The bus, which was traveling “at full speed,” did not crash into any other vehicle. “Basically, it lost control from the median” just before Pembroke, in the eastern part of the city of Buffalo, he specified.
Interstate-90 highway was closed to traffic. Dozens of ambulances and helicopters rushed to the scene of the accident to transport the injured to the hospitals in the region.
The authorities provided interpreters to assist the injured travelers.
The governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, reported on her X account that her teams were coordinating with local authorities to rescue and assist the travelers affected in this “tragic” tourist bus accident.
