His arrival in Mexico occurs after being arrested in Los Angeles by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE in July, due to immigration irregularities and the existence of an outstanding arrest warrant in Mexico since 2023.

What is JC Chávez Jr. accused of?

According to court records, Chávez Jr. is accused by the FGR of having links to the Sinaloa Cartel, facing charges of organized crime and arms trafficking.

Moreover, investigations based on phone taps between 2021 and 2022 place him as a “henchman” working for Néstor Ernesto Pérez Salas, also known as “El Nini”, carrying out acts of violence under the criminal group’s orders.

The arrest warrant against him was issued in January 2023, although the investigation was opened in 2019. The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, recently acknowledged that the case had not been made public until she requested a report from the FGR after his arrest in the United States.

Implications in the world of boxing and politics

The imprisonment of Chávez Jr shakes both Mexican boxing and the political and judicial spheres.

In the United States, DHS authorities described the former boxer as “a risk to public safety” and questioned how he had been allowed to re-enter the country despite the arrest warrant in Mexico.

Now, under federal custody in Hermosillo, the son of the legend will face the most serious accusations of his career on national territory, in a case that exposes the intersection between sports, drug trafficking, and institutional omissions in both countries.
