During a press conference, Bowser emphasized that, although Washington has seen a decrease in crime rates, it is committed to working with federal supervisors to ensure the safety of residents. However, she stressed that the local administration maintains authority over the recruitment, dismissal, and budget of the Metropolitan Police Department.

On the other hand, the head of the Metropolitan Police, Pamela Smith, expressed her support for collaboration with federal forces, focusing on combating the proliferation of illegal weapons and reducing crime in critical areas of the city. Smith believed that federal presence can strengthen local efforts in these specific areas.

This intervention takes place in a context where official data indicates a 26% reduction in violent crimes during 2025 compared to the previous year. Despite these figures, the federal administration insists on the need for direct action to restore order and security in Washington D.C.
