As a precaution, schools near the base, including Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School, remain on alert or under a “soft lockdown” to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The commander of Fort Stewart issued precise instructions to military personnel to secure doors and windows, stay inside the facilities, and keep phone lines open to report any news. Access to the base remains restricted until further notice.

The governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, expressed his solidarity with the victims and their families, and thanked the security forces for their prompt response to the incident.

Fort Stewart is the largest military base east of the Mississippi River and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division of the United States Army. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident in coordination with federal and local agencies to clarify the facts and prevent future episodes.
