The impact of its release was immediate: during Memorial Day weekend, the movie generated $182.6 million at the box office in the United States and $341 million worldwide. This extraordinary start motivated Disney to confirm that a sequel to the live-action version is already in the works, just a few weeks after releasing this first installment in theaters.

What is “Lilo & Stitch” live action about?

Just like the 2002 animated film, the story once again focuses on Lilo, a Hawaiian girl played by Maia Kealoha, who forms an unexpected friendship with a blue alien being named Stitch after he accidentally crash-lands on Earth.

Lilo, who struggles to fit in with her peers, lives with her older sister Nani, played by Sydney Agudong. Both will have to face the consequences of Stitch being pursued by alien forces who want to return him to his planet.

Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, the cast also includes Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley, Hannah Waddingham as the voice of the Grand Councilwoman, Zach Galifianakis as the scientist Jumba Jookiba, and Courtney B. Vance as Agent Cobra Bubbles. Chris Sanders, who directed the original film and voiced Stitch, returns to participate once again by portraying the beloved character.

This new version maintains the essence of the classic animated film released in 2002, including special appearances by actors who lent their voices in the original movie such as Amy Hill, Tia Carrere, and Jason Scott Lee.

When is “Lilo & Stitch” premiering on Disney+?

After its release in theaters on May 23, the film will arrive on the Disney+ platform on September 3, completing an extensive 124-day exhibition window in theaters. The release will be worldwide, in both the United States and Latin America, as well as the rest of the world.

The live-action “Snow White” took 83 days to arrive on the streaming platform due to only grossing 205 million dollars worldwide.
