“Faced with the repeated non-compliance with the previously imposed precautionary measures, I order the house arrest of Jair Messias Bolsonaro,” declared Judge Alexandre de Moraes, the case instructor, according to statements collected by the Brazilian media outlet UOL.

The decision comes after the Police raided Bolsonaro’s residence in Brasilia, as part of an investigation linking him to the financing of an international campaign to pressure the United States to impose sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court judges. Washington is said to have already revoked visas for several of these judges.
According to researchers, Bolsonaro allegedly allocated up to 2 million reais (approximately $360,000) to promote this campaign through his son, Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, who carried out activities in the US since March. The actions took place simultaneously with a growing interest from former President Donald Trump in the legal process faced by his Brazilian ally.
Two weeks ago, the Brazilian Prosecutor’s Office requested that Bolsonaro be declared guilty for his role in the attempted coup following the 2022 elections. If convicted, he could face penalties of up to 40 years in prison, as well as permanent political disqualification.
The former president and seven other individuals are identified as part of the core of the conspiracy, accused of criminal association, attempted violent abolition of the rule of law, coup d’état, and damage to public property during the assault on institutions on January 8, 2023.
