The Kremlin warned the United States on Monday that “in a nuclear war there can be no winners” after Donald Trump announced the deployment of two nuclear submarines in response to an alleged Russian threat.

The President of the United States made this decision in response to what he considered “provocative statements” on social media by the former Russian president and current Vice President of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev, who warned of a possible war between the two countries.

Russia reacts to Trump’s statements

“In a nuclear war there can be no winners. This is surely the main principle that guides us,” said Dmitri Peskov, presidential spokesperson, during his daily phone press conference, where he urged caution when making statements about nuclear arsenals. “We believe that everyone should be very careful in their statements regarding the nuclear issue,” declared Peskov.

This is the first Russian reaction to the announcement made last Friday by the American leader, who did not specify the location zone of the submarines.

Peskov emphasized that Moscow does not consider that there is currently any kind of nuclear escalation taking place between the two powers, so “we would not like to be involved in such controversy.”

“It is clear that it is a very complex and sensitive issue that, of course, is perceived by many in an impulsive way,” he said. On the other hand, he added, Russia, whose position on the matter is responsible, believes that “everyone should be very careful in relation to nuclear rhetoric.”

Why did Trump order the deployment of nuclear submarines?

“I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines in the corresponding regions, just in case these senseless and inflammatory statements go further,” said Donald Trump on the Truth Social platform.

Medvedev criticized last week the ultimatum that the United States imposed on Russia to stop the war in Ukraine and warned that it could lead to a conflict between the two countries.

“Trump is playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 or 10 days... He should remember two things. First: Russia is neither Israel nor even Iran. And second: each new ultimatum is a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country,” Medvedev wrote on Monday on his X account.

The Kremlin defended today Medvedev’s controversial opinions, but emphasized that it is President Vladimir Putin who defines the country’s foreign policy. “In every country, there are government members who have different views on ongoing events. There are also people with very radical positions in the United States and European countries. That always happens," said the Russian presidential spokesperson.

Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, will travel to Russia.

Despite this moment of tensions, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected in Russia this week.

Dmitri Peskov estimated on Monday that this visit will be “important and useful.” “We are always happy to see Witkoff in Moscow and delighted to be in touch with him,” he declared, indicating that a meeting with Putin was not ruled out.
