Sheinbaum denies Trump: Mexico does not pay a 25% tariff on fentanyl

After her call with her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, ruled out that her country is paying a 25% tariff for fentanyl trafficking at the Mexico - United States border, and clarified that this tax refers to goods that are outside the USMCA.

This Thursday, President Sheinbaum held a 40-minute phone call with the Republican, during which both leaders agreed to postpone the 30% tariffs on Mexican exports for 90 days.

During her “Mañanera” conference, President Sheinbaum was questioned about what the President of the United States, Donald Trump, meant by the 25% tariff on fentanyl. In response, the president clarified the following: “Remember that the statement made by the United States Government in the second negotiation is that the 25% that is outside the treaty, their argument for that 25% has to do with the issue of fentanyl,” she added.

Therefore, the president pointed out that: “It refers to President Trump’s publication in his decree of March 3 or 4, what does it mean for us? that everything within the T-MEC does not have tariffs, except for what we already know about automotive, steel, and aluminum; and what is outside the deal has a 25% tariff,” she explained.

What is Sheinbaum’s strategy for negotiating with Trump?

On the other hand, President Sheinbaum stated that the strategy of “keeping a cool head, composure, and defending our own principles have been the best option”, she said from the Treasury Hall of National Palace.

Meanwhile, the president assured that Mexico continues to be an excellent country for foreign investments.

“Mexico remains today, within this new world order. We have the best possible agreement, even compared to other nations, investing in Mexico continues to be the best option, so we have a very good situation in the face of this new international order,” she concluded.
