State of shock
His father, Julio César Chávez, spoke for the first time about the situation during a meeting with reporters at the Mexico City International Airport. The boxing idol assured that he has already been able to communicate with his son and that he is “in shock” by the accusations against him.
“I have spoken to my son and he is in shock,” the “Great Mexican Champion” said. “He told me, ‘How can they accuse me of all this, dad?’”
Chávez defended the innocence of his son and stated that the allegations circulating, such as alleged links to drug trafficking or weapons, are false. “I am calm because my son is innocent, everything will be sorted out. He is not a criminal, everything will be cleared up,” he assured.
Currently, Chávez Jr. remains in custody at a detention center in the state of Texas. His legal defense indicated that the case is being handled by an immigration lawyer, although a date for his possible deportation or case resolution has not been confirmed yet.
So far, the American authorities have not provided further details on the legal status of the former boxer or specified if he will face additional charges besides the expiration of his visa.
His lawyer, Michael Goldstein, explained that Chávez Jr. is under the protection of federal authorities and that his situation is being handled by a lawyer specialized in immigration matters. “We understand that he is still in ICE custody in Texas,” he declared.
The lawyer avoided giving any possible resolution or deadline in the case. “I wish we could tell you,” he replied when asked if he knew how much longer the detainee would remain in custody or when he could be repatriated.
