Bolsonaro and seven other people are at the core of a plot accused of criminal association, attempting to violently abolish the rule of law, staging a coup, and causing damage to property through the mobilizations that culminated in the attempted takeover of institutions on January 8, 2023.

Last Monday, Trump denounced an alleged “political persecution” and “witch hunt” against Bolsonaro and then, in an almost unprecedented event in international politics, applied a 50% tariff to Brazil against its exports to the United States for the treatment of the former president who is being prosecuted.
What did Lula say against Bolsonaro?
“That coward, who planned a coup in this country (...) sent his son to the United States to ask Trump to threaten us,” said the president of Brazil at an event with members of his government in the state of Espírito Santo, as reported by the Globo’s G1 portal."
“These people should be ashamed of themselves,” continued Lula da Silva in response to the recent public praise from the President of the United States towards Bolsonaro, in the same week that he announced 50% tariffs on Brazil.
Trump himself insisted to the press on Friday that Bolsonaro is being treated “very unfairly”, although he has not ruled out speaking with Lula “at some point, but not now”.
Brazil will turn to the WTO
In response to the coercive measures from the White House, the Brazilian president stated that they will resort to the World Trade Organization (WTO), although he also mentioned that they will act reciprocally if diplomacy fails.
“This is nothing more than an attack against a political rival,” argued Lula.
