A federal judge temporarily blocked the executive order of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, which seeks to end birthright citizenship for children of immigrants, following a class-action lawsuit.

“The deprivation of U.S. citizenship and an abrupt change in a long-standing policy causes irreparable harm to the plaintiffs,” argued federal judge of the district of New Hampshire, Joseph Laplante, as reported by CNN.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit on behalf of a group of individuals affected by the possible end of birthright citizenship, enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of 1868.

The ruling represents a setback for the Trump administration, after the Supreme Court decided at the end of June to limit the judges’ powers to nationally block executive orders from the former president, although it maintained the right to file class action lawsuits.
