The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced that he has nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, a move that has sparked criticism due to coinciding with recent military attacks against Iran.

During a dinner on Monday at the White House, Netanyahu personally handed Trump the nomination letter, praising him for the joint operation that, according to both leaders, destroyed three key Iranian nuclear facilities. “He is forging peace as we speak, one country and region after another,” Netanyahu said, as quoted by the AP agency.

The offensive included the use of Tomahawk missiles and bunker bombs to neutralize alleged nuclear threats, an action that Tehran has condemned as a violation of its sovereignty and that several European countries consider a risk of escalation in the Middle East.
Although Trump has expressed his aspiration for the Nobel Prize on multiple occasions, this nomination comes amidst the intensification of the conflict in Gaza, where Israel continues its offensive against Hamas, and while a 60-day ceasefire is being negotiated with international mediation.
In the past, Trump promoted the Abraham Accords, normalizing diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab countries, an argument that Netanyahu highlighted when nominating him. However, analysts consulted by Euronews and AP warned that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to those who achieve proven reductions in violence, not to those who promote military actions.
Trump thanked for the gesture and said he felt “honored” by the nomination, which he considers a recognition of his role as a global mediator.
This is not the first time that Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. In June 2025, Republican congressman Earl “Buddy” Carter from Georgia submitted his nomination, arguing that the former president had played an “extraordinary and historic role” in facilitating a ceasefire between Israel and Iran and preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Trump’s nomination also rekindles the debate about the political use of international awards in a key election year for the United States. This public endorsement by Netanyahu could strengthen Trump’s image among his Republican base, portraying him as a strong leader in foreign policy with high-profile achievements, while for Israel it represents securing the continuity of a strategic ally if Trump returns to the White House. However, European diplomats consulted by Euronews warned that the nomination could undermine multilateral efforts to resume nuclear negotiations with Iran, which have been suspended since 2022.
Meanwhile, Tehran has promised to respond to the attacks and has intensified its contacts with Russia and China in search of support against Western pressure.
