Surprisingly, last Tuesday Zohran Mamdani won the Democratic primaries over former governor Andrew Cuomo and became the candidate for the mayor of New York, sparking controversy even within his party as he is an immigrant, Muslim, and defines himself as a “democratic socialist.”

The 33-year-old candidate, born in Uganda to a family of Indian immigrants, had the support of other left-wing Democratic members such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Bernie Sanders, and became the target of attacks from the far-right in the United States, including Donald Trump.

What did Donald Trump say about Zohran Mamdani?
“It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor,” Trump began in a message on Truth Social in which he did not hold back on insults towards other politicians in the party.
“We have had radical leftists before, but this is getting a bit ridiculous. She looks terrible, her voice is harsh, she is not very intelligent," de Mandani said, pointing fingers at other Democratic congressmen like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, or Chuck Schumer, who has been called “crybaby” and “great Palestinian senator”.
“Our country is really screwed up!” commented the president of the United States.
“Unfortunately, Democratic leadership is often tied to the billionaire class and their campaign contributions. What they need to do is make a decision. Which side are they on? Accepting money from billionaires or fighting for the needs of the working class?” said the president on NBC.
Could Mamdani be the next mayor of New York?
For the past two decades, New York City has been one of the strongholds of the Democratic Party, achieving wide victories that hover around 70% of the votes, so whoever wins the primaries ends up securing the position.
However, for the upcoming elections scheduled for November 4th, he will face tough opposition from the current mayor Eric Adams, who in 2021 won as a democrat candidate but will now run as an independent after being accused of corruption.
