The hurricane season that officially began in June has its first named system after the formation of Tropical Storm Andrea.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the tropical storm Andrea is located in the Atlantic at latitude 36.6 degrees north, 48.9 degrees west, about 1,398 miles off the east coast of the United States.

The system has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and is moving at 17 miles per hour towards the east-northeast. It is expected to continue weakening and by Wednesday morning it will be a tropical depression. The system does not pose a threat to land.
“The tropical storm Andrea has formed in the Atlantic. It is forecasted to weaken and dissipate on Wednesday while remaining in open waters,” reads the report from the agency responsible for monitoring atmospheric phenomena.

Experts agree that it will be an “active” period. On April 3rd, the Colorado State University (CSU) presented its initial forecast, anticipating an “above-average” season.
According to the report, 17 tropical storms could form, with 9 of them becoming hurricanes, including 4 of category three or higher, meaning with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour (mph) or more.
