This movie will be released in the same summer movie season as another live-action version of an animated film originally written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Lilo & Stitch.

It premiered on the same day (June 13) as How to Train Your Dragon 2 in 2014, an intentional nod to the anniversary.

The new live-action version will premiere during the 15th anniversary of the original animated film.

Very literal adaptation: some users on Reddit describe it as a “shot-for-shot remake” identical to the original animated version.

The renowned Framestore worked on the VFX, supervised by Christian Manz.

On set, animatronics and mechanical arms (gimbals) were used alongside the actors to simulate the movements of the dragons during the flying scenes.

The movie was revealed in November 2024, with a trailer during the February 2025 Super Bowl and mentions of IMAX and Burger King.

Despite the delay, filming quickly ended on May 16, 2024, after just 85 days of intensive shooting.

The animation team carefully studied the reactions of cats, dogs, and horses to achieve realistic expressiveness in Chimuelo and preserve his unique personality.

Real locations on the coast of Northern Ireland were chosen, not just sets, to give authenticity to the mythical Viking village of Berk.

This is the first official live-action adaptation of a DreamWorks movie.

Before the premiere, a second part was already announced, scheduled for June 11, 2027, showing the studio’s confidence in creating a long-lasting saga.

Although the cast is made up of British, Irish, Scottish, and New Zealander actors, Mason Thames is the only American actor in the movie.

This movie was released the same year as the Universal Epic Universe at the Orlando resort, which includes a zone dedicated to How to Train Your Dragon.

This is the second live-action adaptation of an animated movie for Nico Parker; the first one was Dumbo (2019).

Expected release: estimated debut in the US between 65 and 100 million USD; BoxOfficeTheory places it at $65-75 M. Another specialized projection points towards $84.3 M.

The previous animated films had openings of $43-55 million and global box office revenues ranging from $495 million to $622 million.

In South Korea, it has already grossed $4 million in its opening, surpassing local productions.

Days before its release, The Numbers reported $550 thousand internationally, reflecting its first weeks.
