Donald Trump did not rule out an Israeli attack on Iran just days before a new round of talks between Iranian and American delegations in the Omani capital of Muscat regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

Tension in the Middle East has increased significantly in the last few hours, and the United States Embassy in Israel issued an alert on Thursday requesting its employees to avoid traveling from major cities like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, or Beersheba.

Why did tensions escalate with Iran?

“I don’t want to say it’s imminent, but it seems like something that very well could happen. It’s very simple, not complicated: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” stated the President of the United States in remarks to the press.

On the other hand, the Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Dan Caine, deemed “worrisome” the latest report published by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the Iranian nuclear program. “The international community seems to be debating what to do about it, and in the meantime, we are watching how this situation unfolds,” he commented during a hearing before the US House Armed Services Committee.

Caine’s words come after Iran announced plans to build a new uranium enrichment facility in response to the resolution passed by the IAEA Board of Governors, which accuses Tehran of violating its obligations for the first time in nearly two decades.

The text argues that Iran is violating its obligations based on the report presented on May 31 by the IAEA to the member states, firmly rejected by Tehran amid tensions surrounding the Iranian nuclear program and amidst contacts with Washington to achieve a new agreement, with the sixth round scheduled for this very Sunday.

Will negotiations between the United States and Iran continue?

The United States Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, said that Washington is “committed to the peace process” and has given Iran “all possible opportunities,” while fully recognizing the threat posed by the country having nuclear weapons.

The contacts between the parties are the first of this kind since the United States withdrew from the historic nuclear agreement signed three years ago in 2018, a measure taken during Trump’s first term, who has now opted to restart the negotiations in an attempt to forge a new agreement with Tehran.

Oman authorities confirmed on Thursday that the new round of contacts between the United States and Iran to address a possible agreement regarding the Iranian nuclear program will take place on Sunday.
