Trump supporters are slowly turning against Elon Musk

A quick survey by YouGov of 4,000 people showed that Republican voters backed Trump over Musk by a ratio of 12 to 1.

There is no juicier scandal in American politics than a high-profile fight. And this time, the protagonists are two titans: Donald Trump and Elon Musk. The bromance between the president and the Tesla magnate seems to be falling apart... and Trump’s followers are not exactly on Elon’s side.

It all started when Trump, during an appearance at the White House alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, dropped a bomb: “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will have it anymore.” A sentence that, in the Trump universe, is equivalent to publicly snubbing someone.

Musk, who had been criticizing the new Republican legislative package for days —the one that Trump affectionately calls the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—, didn’t stay silent. He responded with a retweet that suggested nothing less than the president should be... removed from office.

“50% genius, 50% child... 100% trouble?”

In the hallways of Republican WhatsApp groups, laughter was widespread. Some consultants close to Trump recalled a phrase attributed to the president about Musk: “50% genius, 50% child.”

But after the public exchange, a sharp-witted advisor declared: “After today, I think it’s 100% stupid.”

Despite everything, right-wing media outlets, usually loyal to Trump, tried to remain neutral—at least at first.

Even when Musk accused Trump of being in Epstein’s files (which, let’s be honest, is like kicking the MAGA hornet’s nest), the reaction was one of disbelief rather than anger.

“I don’t want to see my parents fighting.”

Greg Gutfeld from Fox News summed up the general feeling with humor: “At least I know what’s going on, and I can enjoy it a bit. But I want them to stop. I don’t want to see my parents fighting.” Meanwhile, Brian Kilmeade called for a “big and beautiful” truce, while others dreamed of reconciliation.

But the damage was already done. Catturd, a popular MAGA influencer and former Musk favorite, exploded: “What a fraud Alex Jones turned out to be”, after he asked Trump to respond to Musk. Catturd also shared an image of Trump with the phrase “Trump 2028”. Musk would have unfollowed him.

Bannon, deportations, and SpaceX

Steve Bannon, never shy, went further: he called for investigating Musk’s immigration status and even proposed seizing SpaceX before midnight.

Yes, that’s the level the novel reached. Meanwhile, Laura Loomer, another influential voice in the Trumpist circle, begged Musk on X: “Please tweet something nice about Trump tonight.”

And although the White House tried to put out the fire with a moderate statement, the MAGA ecosystem already seemed to be leaning. A quick survey by YouGov of 4,000 people showed that Republican voters backed Trump over Musk by a ratio of 12 to 1.

Not bad for someone who has just started a war with one of the richest men on the planet.
