How was Palou’s victory in the Indianapolis 500?

Palou, a three-time IndyCar champion, had a perfect race on the American track. In an exciting finish, the Spaniard snatched the lead from Marcus Ericsson and defended against the Swede to hold on to the victory.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver, who is leading the championship with a comfortable advantage, took the lead 13 laps from the end of the 200-lap 500-mile race.

The Catalan driver slowly worked on his comeback, starting from sixth position. Once in the lead, he took advantage of the draft from Devlin DeFrancesco and Louis Foster (who were ahead of him but lagging in the race) to maintain a good pace.

“I can’t believe it. What an incredible day. What an incredible race. I can’t believe it. It’s amazing. It’s incredible to be here. Incredible to win. I’ve already lost my voice and I haven’t even started celebrating yet,” stated Palou in statements to Fox Sports, who has won five out of the six races this season.

The American David Malukas finished third and the two-time Mexican runner-up Pato O’Ward was fourth, while the Swede Felix Rosenqvist crossed the finish line fifth.

Palou, who finished second in 2021, redeemed himself by breaking his oval curse to achieve a historic victory for Spanish motorsport.
