What are the main problems of power outages in Spain?
The power outage, reported around noon in Spain, is affecting the Iberian Peninsula, including Portugal and also some areas of France.
The Government assures that it is working to determine the origin of the general power outage that took place on Monday at noon in Spain and Portugal, and guarantees that it will allocate all available resources to resolve the situation “as soon as possible.”
From La Moncloa, the Spanish government palace, it was reported that President Pedro Sánchez and Sara Aagesen Muñoz, the current Third Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, traveled to the Red Eléctrica control center.
In addition, Sánchez called for an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council.
The blackout has also affected phone connections and mobile phone data supply. Payment systems have also been affected by the lack of network connection.
Renfe, the main railway operator in Spain, has reported that the widespread blackout that has affected the country has caused “trains to be stopped” and that departures from the stations will not take place.
Emergencias Madrid activated the Municipal Emergency Plan in emergency phase to coordinate actions motivated by the power outage affecting the city.
In Madrid, the underground train and most of the traffic lights stopped working.
The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, mobilized to the coordination center and, from there, requested to “minimize travel”. Madrid has activated the Phase 1 Emergency Plan to coordinate actions in response to the power outage.
Meanwhile, Red Eléctrica reported on its social media that the voltage is starting to recover in the northern and southern regions of the peninsula, “key to gradually addressing the electricity supply.” “It is a process that involves the gradual energization of the transmission network as the generation groups are connected”, they added. In cities in northern Spain, the power supply started to return to normal.
How does the electricity supply work in Spain?
Spain has a partially liberalized electrical system. While private companies such as Iberdrola, Endesa, and Naturgy dominate the generation and commercialization of energy, the management of the high-voltage transmission grid is the responsibility of Red Eléctrica de España (REE), a company of strategic interest with public participation.
REE is responsible for ensuring the supply throughout the country and coordinates with international network operators to prevent or manage incidents such as the one this Monday, which also affected areas of Portugal and southern France.
