What is the medication that Elon Musk takes to lose weight?

The tycoon and major contributor to President-elect Donald Trump revealed that he takes Mounjaro, a medication that typically treats type 2 diabetes by reducing a person's blood sugar levels.

Musk posted a photo of himself dressed as Santa Claus in front of a Christmas tree and wrote: "Ozempic Santa" and in the following two responses to his post, he added: "Like Cocaine Bear, but with Santa and ozempic! Technically, Mounjaro, but doesn't sound the same."

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Mounjaro in November 2023, under the brand name Zepbound, to act as a medication for weight control for those struggling with overweight or obesity.

The common names Ozempic and Wegovy are the brand names of a medication called semaglutide, while Mounjaro is the brand name of a medication called tirzepatide. Both work similarly to reduce appetite, but there are some differences.

It suppresses appetite and makes you feel fuller. It changes the speed at which the stomach empties,” explained Dr. Low Wang, a UCHealth expert in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism. “It’s a completely new class of drug,” she said. “Instead of being an agonist of a single receptor, like semaglutide (the drug in Ozempic and Wegovy), Mounjaro activates two receptors at the same time. That’s why it’s called a ‘dual agonist’.”
