In the same interview, the governor described the decision as a blow to public trust. "I understand the desire to protect a son, especially with everything the Biden family has faced. But I took the president at his word," Newsom declared, emphasizing that his disappointment lies in the breaking of that commitment.

The pardon, announced last Sunday, exempts Hunter Biden from all legal accusations related to the last ten years, including his illegal possession of weapons and tax evasion, as well as his controversial relationship with the Ukrainian energy company Burisma. Although the White House justified the measure by alleging alleged political persecution, special prosecutor David Weiss dismissed these claims and stated that the case still needed to be reviewed judicially.

Newsom's criticisms carry particular weight, given his history as a close ally of Biden. For years, the California governor has stood up for the president in numerous situations, endorsing his decisions and governing abilities. However, this shift marks a significant distancing at a politically delicate moment.

Newsom, a rising figure in the Democratic Party and considered a possible presidential candidate in 2028, did not delve into the ethical implications of the pardon, but made it clear that these types of decisions erode trust in leadership. "It's a matter of principles and keeping one's word," he stated.

The Democratic party continues to face internal crises

The controversy also highlights tensions within the party. While some Democrats support the presidential action, others, like Newsom, fear that decisions like this may affect public perception in a crucial election year.

On the other hand, the White House has remained silent in response to Newsom's comments, while political analysts see in this episode a sign of internal fractures that could impact the long-term Democratic strategy. The pardon of Hunter Biden has not only sparked a national debate but has also raised questions about family influence in politics.
