Many school districts in western Pennsylvania remained closed on Tuesday as the storms finally began to taper off after several days in parts of western New York, Ohio, and Michigan. In those areas, 1 foot or more of snow fell over the last five days. By Monday, over 5 feet of snow had fallen east of Lake Ontario, according to the National Weather Service.

The teams were making good progress in keeping the roads open, officials said, and most travel restrictions had ended by Tuesday morning. However, drivers were still urged to slow down and use caution. Meanwhile, a winter storm warning was issued for parts of western Pennsylvania where a new storm could potentially drop 3 to 9 inches from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning.

The heavy snowfall in recent days was blamed for a series of fatal accidents throughout the region.

Three people died on Monday morning in a crash in Iowa after a driver tried to pass a snowplow and collided with another vehicle, according to the Iowa State Patrol. The drivers of both vehicles and one of their passengers died in the crash.
