Daylight saving time ends and millions of Americans will “fall back” one hour on their clocks in early November. The time change will resume in March, when clocks will “spring forward” and one hour will be lost.

In the United States, the time changes twice a year when there is more light in the mornings and evenings, depending on the time of year and the position of the northern hemisphere in relation to the sun.

Daylight saving time ends in 2024

Although the time change confuses children and pets, daylight saving time will soon end. Daylight saving time will end this year at 2 am EST on Sunday, November 3, when we "fall back" and gain an "extra hour" of sleep. The next time change will occur on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Daylight saving time occurs between March and November, when most Americans set their clocks one hour ahead.

"In November we gain an hour (instead of losing an hour in spring) to have more daylight in the winter mornings," explains USA Today on its website.

In March, when the time is moved forward, it is to add more daylight in the evenings, as in the northern hemisphere, the autumn equinox is on Sunday, September 22nd, marking the beginning of autumn.

When did daylight saving time start in 2024?

Daylight saving time began in 2024 on Sunday, March 10th at 2 am local time, when the clock was set forward by one hour.

However, not all states and territories of the US participate in daylight saving time. Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their time due to the desert climate. In the case of Hawaii, it is not done due to its proximity to the equator, so there is not much variation in daylight hours throughout the year.

There are also five other U.S. territories that do not participate:

American Samoa

Guam

Northern Mariana Islands

Puerto Rico

United States Virgin Islands

The Navajo Nation, located in parts of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, does observe daylight saving time.
