The marriage of the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, and Doug Emhoff is an example of how a simple blind date can change lives. The couple, who will celebrate their tenth wedding anniversary this Thursday, began their love story in 2013 when a mutual friend organized their first meeting.

The incredible story behind Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff's marriage

Determined to take the plunge, Emhoff dialed her number, but his nervousness was reflected in the voicemail message he left, full of improvised and nonsensical phrases. To his surprise, Harris returned the call that same afternoon and they talked for an hour. That first conversation led to their first official date that Saturday night.

The connection between the two of them was immediate and deep, leading them to get married just a year later, in 2014. Ten years later, Emhoff and Harris celebrate a decade of marriage, marked by significant moments in both their personal and professional lives. In a recent speech during the Democratic National Convention, Emhoff shared details about his relationship with Harris, highlighting the love and mutual respect that binds them.

Harris, who has broken barriers by becoming the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of Asian descent to hold the vice presidency of the United States, has had the unwavering support of Emhoff throughout her political career.

Instead of focusing on political issues, Emhoff recently spoke from the heart, describing how his relationship with Harris has been a pillar in his life. "Kamala kept that voicemail," Emhoff said, referring to the first message he left for Harris. "And she makes me listen to it every anniversary."

The couple has faced the challenges of public life together, adapting to the demands and responsibilities that come with it. Emhoff, who left his career as a lawyer to support Harris in her role in the White House, has proudly taken on the title of “Second Gentleman,” being the first in United States history.
