ANAHEIM, California (AP) — Angels star Mike Trout will need a second surgery on his torn meniscus in his left knee, bringing an end to another injury-plagued season for the three-time MVP.

Trout reported on Thursday in a social media post that the MRI showed another tear in the meniscus. He had previously undergone surgery on May 3 to repair the meniscus and had been working to return before they canceled his rehabilitation on Thursday.

"After months of hard work, I felt devastated (on Wednesday) when the MRI showed the tear in the meniscus and that it will require another surgery — ending any hopes of returning this season," Trout posted.

"Playing and competing is a big part of my life. It is equally disheartening and frustrating for me as it is for you, the fans. I understand that I am surely disappointing many, but believe me, I will do everything I can to come back stronger."

Trout hit .220, with 10 home runs and 14 RBIs in 29 games this season with the Los Angeles Angels, who are fourth in the AL West and have little chance of making it to the postseason. In 2021, he was limited to 36 games and 82 the year before.

Trout will earn 37.1 million dollars in the sixth year of his 12-year, 426.5 million dollar contract. His salary will remain the same for the next six years.
