After a quite eventful Thursday in the Olympic Games and the global sports scene due to the episode starring Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, which caused her opponent from the Italian delegation to abandon the round in just 46 seconds due to the force of the impact, on Friday afternoon Taiwanese Lin Yu Ting made her debut, who was also involved in gender testing issues and was disqualified from the 2023 Boxing World Championship.

What is the controversy in Olympic boxing?

Imane Khelif and Lin Yu Ting are on everyone's lips, even before the Games started, due to their high levels of testosterone that led many people on social media - including Elon Musk, J.K. Rowling, and the Prime Minister of Italy - to question the sporting justice of these two boxers.

Both boxers may be related to the condition of hyperandrogenism, which according to information from the Bernabeu Institute website (also known as androgenism) is a disorder characterized by an excessive production of androgens, male sex hormones such as testosterone, in women. This condition can lead to a series of symptoms typical of excess male hormones.

Lin Yu Ting was disqualified in last year's World Championship

Before her debut this Friday against Uzbekistani boxer Sitora Turdibekova, in the featherweight category of 57 kilograms, Lin was in the spotlight in 2023 for losing her bronze medal at the 2023 Boxing World Championship in India, after failing the mandatory gender test imposed by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

The controversy, just like the Algerian boxer, is that despite being disqualified in the world championship, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed her to compete in the current games.

In his defense, the IOC spokesperson, Mark Adams, explained on Tuesday, July 30th, that participation is allowed because "they are women in their sport and it is established that they are women."

Yu Ting Lin, 28 years old and 1.75 meters tall, weighing 57 kilos, arrived at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with 24 fights, of which she won 19 of them
