Colbert was one of the only late-night hosts last night to react to the historic news of the Democratic candidate withdrawing from the campaign for re-election, amid rumors and questioning about his age and fitness to assume the demanding position again.

What did Stephen Colbert say about Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race?
“To honor this great president, tonight I have officially retired my aviators Joe Biden. They will reside there, on my shelf forever, in a place of honor, next to Captain America’s shield. Those aviators did the toughest job of all. They made it look like I had an impression of Joe Biden,” he joked.
In the same humorous vein that is characteristic of the host, Colbert also promised to retire his jokes about President Biden being ‘old’. “They are starting to get old anyway, just like Joe Biden,” he said. “That was the last one, I swear. Now I’m going to save them to use with Donald Trump,” he added amidst laughter from his audience.
Colbert continued the jokes by saying that he still doesn't have an imitation of Kamala Harris, so "she also wears aviator glasses." "We're working on it," he added.
However, the comedian admitted that he will miss Biden, who appeared on The Late Show with Colbert as vice president in September 2015. "On this very show... I urged then-Vice President Biden to run. He ignored me for five years, then he did it and I think he's been a great President. He got this country out of a terrible pandemic. He saved countless lives by encouraging people to get vaccinated. He revived the economy. He brought our allies together. He reaffirmed America's place on the world stage and the most inspiring of all was never Donald Trump," he said.
