The Ocean Safety Agency of Honolulu and the fire department, police, and emergency medical services responded to Mālaekahana Beach on the north shore of Oahu just before 1 p.m. after a call from a person who said they had seen a man who appeared to have been bitten by a shark, Enright said.
The lifeguards took Perry to the shore on a jet ski and the paramedics certified his death, he pointed out.
The organization issued shark alerts in the area following the attack, he added.
Who was Tamayo Perry?
Perry, who worked as a lifeguard on the north coast, started his career at the Ocean Security Agency in July 2016. “He was a beloved lifeguard by all,” said the acting director of Ocean Security in Honolulu, Kurt Lager.
"It is well known on the north coast. He is a professional surfer known worldwide. Tamayo's personality was contagious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone more," Lager added in a press conference.
"'Tamayo was a legendary waterman, and highly respected,' said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, who described Perry's death as 'a tragic loss'."
Acting: Perry's other passion.
On his website Oahu Surfing Experience, Tamayo mentioned that “another huge passion of mine is acting.” He recalled his supporting roles in movies such as “Charlie’s Angels 2,” “Blue Crush,” and “Pirates of the Caribbean 4,” as well as in TV series like “Lost” and “Hawaii Five-0.”
He also appeared in commercials for Nissan Xterra and Coca-Cola.
