The long-awaited documentary about The Beatles, Let It Be, is set to arrive on the Disney+ platform this coming May 8th. The film, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, won an Oscar for Best Original Song Score in 1971. However, the award was accepted by Quincy Jones as none of the original band members attended the ceremony, as they also disagreed with its distribution, sparking controversy.

After 54 years since its original release, Disney is betting on the excellent audiovisual material, which will also have the restoration by Peter Jackson, who was behind The Beatles: Get Back, the 2021 documentary series that also includes material from the 1970 recording and precisely tries to show another side of the quartet's epilogue.

What is Let It Be about, the documentary of The Beatles released in 1970?

The documentary was released just a week after Paul McCartney officially announced his departure from the band. In this way, the film - which accompanied The Beatles' last album - can now be seen after being inaccessible for years. The movie addresses the disintegration of the iconic British group and the tensions between John Lennon, McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, which is why none of the members wanted it to be distributed at that time.

Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who defended his film in Rolling Stone in 2021, said in a statement that the long-standing negative perception of the movie stems from the fact that it was released immediately after the band's breakup.

“People went to see Let It Be with sadness in their hearts, thinking, ‘I will never see The Beatles together again. I will never have that joy,’ and that darkened the perception of the film a lot,” he said in the aforementioned media outlet. “I was amazed by what Peter was able to do with Get Back, using all the footage he had filmed 50 years ago,” he added.

"I have always thought that Let It Be is necessary to complete the story of Get Back," Jackson added.

The restored documentary also comes just a few days after the release of Ringo Starr's new single, February Sky.

At the beginning of this year, Sony Pictures also announced that Sam Mendes (American Beauty and 1917) will be directing four films focused on each member of the band, scheduled for release in 2027.

‘Let It Be’ will feature rehearsal footage, the creation of some of their most famous songs, discussions, and even the historic rooftop concert at Apple Corns studio; all available to stream on Disney+.
